Soft Pastels - Discover the Art of Shadows in the Landscape with Caroline Reid
Ever struggled with shadows in your landscape paintings? This workshop is designed to build both understanding and technique in rendering convincing, expressive shadows using soft pastels.
Shadows play a vital role in landscape art — they ground the image, create depth and perspective, and define the form and structure of the land. More than that, they carry the emotional tone of a scene, helping to reveal the story the artist wants to tell.
Over two days, we’ll explore the theory of light and the different types of shadows as they relate to artistic practice. Through demonstration and guided exercises, you’ll learn how to apply these principles in pastel — developing a luminous summer landscape using layering and underpainting techniques.
By the end of the weekend, students will have gained both a scientific and artistic understanding of how shadows bring light, atmosphere, and meaning to the landscape.
Concluded Workshops:
The Queanbeyan Art Society recently hosted an outstanding series of workshops with renowned impressionist artist Colley Whisson. Conducted over three separate two-day workshops, participants explored a wide range of subjects including landscapes, seascapes, interiors and urban scenes.
Colley’s teaching style was both inspiring and practical. A major focus throughout the workshops was learning to simplify paintings using large brushes and a limited palette. Participants discovered how a carefully selected palette could be mixed to create all the colours needed while maintaining beautiful colour harmony throughout a painting.
Another valuable lesson was the importance of establishing primary, secondary and tertiary focal points to create stronger visual impact and guide the viewer’s eye through the artwork.
The workshops attracted artists from across Australia, including Perth, Brisbane, the NSW South Coast, and local NSW/ACT regions, highlighting the strong reputation both Colley and the Queanbeyan Art Society enjoy within the art community.
A special thank you must also go to the dedicated volunteers and helpers (Halina, Jolanta, Cheryl and John, Gayle and especially Oliver who was very busy all week, they ensured the smooth running of the workshops. From setting up and packing away to organising refreshments, cleaning, and assisting participants throughout the week, their support was invaluable and greatly appreciated.
